Location of Courses
Diverse courses are offered at Art Therapy Ottarsdottir. The location of the courses depends on the needs of the interested party, which can be for example at Art Therapy Ottarsdottir or at the premises of companies, institutions and so on. The courses are also held at the Art Educational Department at Iceland University of the Arts and at the Continuing Education Department at the University of Akureyri.
The courses are based on lectures, discussions and workshops where participants are invited to take part in creative exercises and thereby experience the possibilities included in such work. Theories and methods of art therapy are introduced at the courses. No prior knowledge or experience of art is required to participate. The creative process gives the participants an opportunity to express themselves as well as to increases self-knowledge and personal insight, all of which can facilitate positive life changes. Within an empathetic setting, the participants are given an opportunity to share their experiences, emotions and thoughts with each other, thereby gaining new perspectives on their issues and projects.
Introductory Course I - What is art therapy?
Do you want to unleash the creativity within you and your clients? Do you want to understand how thoughts and emotions are expressed through art making? Do you want to know how you can increase strength and facilitate well-being through making art work? Do you want to increase your understanding about imagery and symbolism of art?
Introductory Course II – Basic Concepts, Methods and Theories of Art Therapy
The course expands on the main topics of Introductory Course I - What is Art Therapy? Insights into the precursors, influences, origins and history of art therapy are offered. The course is based on lectures, reading, written assignments, discussions and workshops where participants get to experience the creative process personally along with the ways it relates to the concepts and theories of art therapy. No prior knowledge or experience of art or creating art is required to participate.
Art Therapy in Education I
The course offers participants insight into the basic theories and methods of art therapy by means of lectures, reading, written assignments, discussions and workshops, where participants experience the creative process and the possibilities it offers. The course presents a number of ways of art making that increase creativity, strengthen self-image, foster connection, increases self-knowledge and facilitate well-being. Knowledge of one’s own artistic imagery increases self-awareness and provides ability to help individuals in need. Ways in which art therapy can be implemented in educational contexts will be introduced in the course. No prior knowledge or experience of art is required to participate.
Art Therapy in Education II
The course offers participants insight into the basic theories and methods of art therapy by means of lectures, reading, written assignments, discussions and workshops, where participants experience the creative process and the possibilities it offers. Knowledge of ones own artistic imagery increases self-awareness and the ability to help individuals in need. A number of ways to create art work will be introduced in the course with the aim of increasing creativity, strengthening self-image, fostering connection, increasing self-knowledge and facilitating well-being. Ways in which art therapy can be implemented in educational contexts will also be introduced in the course.
The concept of “writing-images” which refers to the process of drawing pictures of letters and numbers will be reviewed in the course. The “writing-image stage”, which describes a phase when children experiment with drawing writing-images, will be discussed,. Various methods of making writing-images with the aim of restoring, strengthening and preserving an educational base will be reviewed in the course.
Art therapy for people who have experienced trauma
The course is intended for professionals who seek to expand their understanding of their own and their clients’ art making with the aim of facilitating well-being and self-development. The course is suitable for professionals who treat individuals who have experienced trauma. Participants are expected to have education and experience related to therapy and/or have basic knowledge about art therapy which they may have acquired at anther foundation course on art therapy.
